A 56-year-old resident of Sambir district was convicted under public prosecution by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office. He was found guilty of violating the rules of road safety by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which caused the death of two people (Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to 7 years in prison. He was also deprived of the right to drive vehicles for 3 years.
The investigation established that the accident occurred in August 2020 on the Kyiv-Chop highway near one of the villages of Turka district. The driver of a car lost control and ran into a local resident walking on the side of the road.
After the collision, the car slid into a ditch and hit a tree. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian and a 61-year-old man who was a passenger in the car died at the scene.
The accused will be kept in custody until the verdict comes into force.
The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region.
The period for appealing the decision is currently underway.
Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved by law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
