Former Lecturer to Be Tried for Attempted Illegal Departure

Prosecutors from the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office have referred an indictment to court regarding a former lecturer from one of Lviv’s universities.

The investigation established that last summer, a Lviv resident organized a scheme for military service men to cross the border. The accused former lecturer promised a man of draft age to arrange documents as if he was employed in diplomatic service at the representative office of one of the international organizations. Subsequently, this would have allowed the “client” to leave Ukraine without hindrance.

The “transporter” valued his services at 18,000 USD. However, he failed to realize his plan – the man was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine in the center of Lviv immediately after receiving the first part of the funds – 9,000 USD.

The accused is charged with organizing the illegal transfer of a person across the state border of Ukraine by facilitating its commission through advice, instructions, provision of means, or removing obstacles for selfish motives (Part 3, Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Pre-trial investigation – Lviv District Police Department No. 1 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Lviv region, operative accompaniment – the Security Service of Ukraine in the Lviv region.

Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
