Former Inspector to be Tried for Bribes on Timber Products

Former inspector of Ukrtransbezpeka is accused of illegal benefits for timber products.

Prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office have sent to court the case concerning the former senior state inspector of the transport safety oversight department in Ivano-Frankivsk region. He is charged with receiving illegal benefits (part 1, article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The investigation established that the official organized a scheme of systematic extortion. He received bribes from a man responsible for the transportation of timber products in Ivano-Frankivsk region. In exchange for monthly payments, the inspector guaranteed that trucks would transport timber, including wood chips, without hindrance. He also promised not to fine drivers for violating dimensional and weight regulations.

It has been documented that over two months of such ‘services’, the participant received 20,000 hryvnias. Currently, the man has been dismissed from his position. The pre-trial investigation was carried out by the Territorial Directorate of the State Bureau of Investigations located in Lviv city, with operational support from the SBU Administration in Ivano-Frankivsk region and the Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police of Ukraine in Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Note: According to article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court conviction.
