Forester from Yavoriv district accused of illegal logging worth over UAH 100,000

An indictment has been submitted to court against a forester of the Nemyriv forestry enterprise in Yavoriv district, who is accused of illegal logging which, according to the investigation, caused the state losses of over UAH 100,000. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the case file, in August 2024 the accused, who was responsible for forest protection, was aware of scheduled lawful logging being carried out within the forestry enterprise. On the basis of a logging permit, timber harvesting was authorised on a designated plot of 0.5 hectares, and the forester was supposed to provide protection and oversight of the works.

The investigation believes that instead of exercising proper oversight, the official independently organised additional illegal logging of trees not listed in the felling allocation documents and which were not subject to felling. Among the felled trees were oaks, hornbeams and pines with diameters ranging from 10 to 60 cm.

According to preliminary calculations, these actions caused damage to the state amounting to over UAH 100,000. The forester is charged with illegal logging in forests that caused grave consequences, under Part 4 of Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region with operational support from the Office of the Security Service of Ukraine in Lviv region.

Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt has been proven in accordance with the law and confirmed by a guilty verdict of a court.
