Cyber police of Lviv region, together with investigators from district police department No. 1 in Lviv region, under the procedural guidance of the Halytskyi District Prosecutor’s Office, exposed a 62-year-old local resident who defrauded the relatives of a missing serviceman for over 2 million hryvnias. This was reported by MVS.LVIV.
The suspect had previously come to the attention of law enforcement for committing fraudulent schemes. Authorities established that the perpetrator had information about the soldier’s disappearance and, understanding the family’s despair, decided to profit from their grief. He misled the soldier’s brother, convincing him that he allegedly had connections in Russia and among Russian military personnel and could organize a search for him.
The scheme involved systematically receiving funds under the pretext of “search operations.” The man fabricated stories about trips to the occupiers, supposedly requiring thousands of dollars, reported on “independent searches” for the body at combat positions, and allegedly established the defender’s whereabouts among prisoners.
