At the initiative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, an innovative pilot project “Community Prosecutor” was launched on the basis of the Halych District Prosecutor’s Office in Lviv. The latter was represented by Deputy Head of the District Prosecutor’s Office Zoryana Nikerui, as well as prosecutors Anastasia Plyuskva, Bohdan Maksymtsiv, and Kyrylo Mishkurov.
Overall, the project involves the Halych District Prosecutor’s Office in Lviv, the Bucha District Prosecutor’s Office in Kyiv Region, the Bolhrad District Prosecutor’s Office in Odesa Region, and the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
The project aims to ensure effective interaction between law enforcement agencies and the local community to resolve legal issues and combat crime.
The project concept is aimed at putting into practice the principle that the interests of people and their safety are at the centre of the work of prosecutors and law enforcement officers.
For this purpose, some prosecutors in the regions became “community prosecutors”. They were selected from among the existing prosecutors. Additional training is regularly provided for them to ensure effective project implementation.
The main tasks of the community prosecutor include
– analysing the causes of crime, improving ways to combat crime;
– introducing a human-centred approach to work;
– collecting information about the needs and demands of the community;
– Developing comprehensive mechanisms for enhancing community safety in cooperation with local authorities, the police and other interested bodies or organisations;
– Interaction with civil society organisations and the media;
– more meaningful information about the results of the work.
This cooperation has resulted in the development of adaptive security strategies that take into account the specifics of the region and each community.
This approach will enhance community security and, as a result, improve the quality of life of its residents. This will help not only to overcome the consequences of crime, but also to eradicate its causes.
