In Lviv, doctors will stand trial for performing a failed abortion on a patient, causing severe consequences to her health.
The surgical procedure was conducted at a clinic that lacked the appropriate license and conditions for providing inpatient medical services. The operation resulted in the irreversible loss of the woman’s reproductive function. The doctors and nurse involved in the crime face up to five years in prison.
Law enforcement established that in March 2025, an obstetrician-gynecologist-geneticist, along with other medical staff, performed surgery on a 29-year-old patient in the late stage of pregnancy to artificially terminate the pregnancy. The doctor failed to conduct proper examinations, did not ensure consultations with related specialists, and chose an incorrect approach to the surgery.
As a result, the medical staff caused the patient massive traumatic injuries dangerous to life, which subsequently led to the loss of reproductive function. Realizing the operation was not going as planned, the doctors brought the woman out of sedation, after which the obstetrician personally drove her to a city hospital.
During the operation, the gynecologist was assisted by a nurse, and a third accused person, who worked as an ultrasound diagnostic doctor at a private medical clinic, falsely documented a non-viable pregnancy prior to the procedure to justify the artificial termination of pregnancy.
Law enforcement also established that the clinic where the operation took place is not an institution authorized to provide medical services in inpatient settings, and its licensing conditions do not allow surgical interventions. Additionally, no mandatory medical documentation was opened on the patient, and the accused were not in a labor relationship with the clinic.
The perpetrators were exposed by detectives from the Department for the Investigation of Crimes Against Life and Health of Persons of the Lviv Police Investigation Department, under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The pre-trial investigation in the criminal case is completed, and the indictment has been sent to court for trial. All three medical professionals are accused of committing a crime under part 3 of article 134 (Illegal abortion or sterilization) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Furthermore, the obstetrician-gynecologist-geneticist who performed the surgery is charged with a crime under part 1 of article 140 (Improper performance of professional duties by a medical or pharmaceutical worker), and the doctor who conducted the ultrasound diagnosis is charged under part 1 of article 358 (Forgery of documents, seals, stamps, and forms, sale or use of forged documents, seals, stamps) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The maximum punishment facing the defendants is up to five years of imprisonment with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.
