Prosecutors of the Galician District Prosecutor’s Office in Lviv proved in court the guilt of a 21-year-old woman who beat her one-month-old son.
The court sentenced her to 8 years of imprisonment, taking into account her admission of guilt, young age, remorse, and difficult life circumstances. In October 2024, the child and the mother were taken to the intensive care unit of one of Lviv’s children’s hospitals. The woman lived in Drohobych at the Social Center for Mothers and Children.
Employees of the institution noticed that the boy was not gaining weight well and directed the mother to undergo examination. After treatment in Lviv, the boy was moved from intensive care to the therapeutic department. When the boy started crying, the woman grabbed him and began shaking him violently, then threw him into the hospital crib.
The next day, doctors found bruises, broken shoulder bones and collarbone, and significant brain hemorrhages in the child. The mother was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The bodily injuries caused irreversible brain damage to the child. The boy was transferred to the Lviv Regional Council Communal Non-Profit Enterprise ‘Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Center’, but died in September.
The mother was charged with intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in the victim’s death, and intentional infliction of moderate bodily harm. Until the verdict comes into legal force, the convicted will remain in custody. The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the Lviv District Police Department No. 1.
