Zolochiv resident sentenced to more than 5 years in prison for stealing National Guardsman’s kit and fraud

In Zolochiv, a 29-year-old local resident was sentenced to 5 years and 5 months in prison for a series of criminal offences committed over the course of four days. This was reported by the Zolochiv District Prosecutor’s Office.

At the end of August 2024, at one of Zolochiv’s car parks, the man entered the car of a National Guard serviceman through an unlocked door. Taking advantage of the hours of darkness and the unrestricted access, he stole a car radio, military kit and the vehicle documents from the “nine”.

The convicted man hid the stolen items in an abandoned building, and planned to return the documents to the owner for a reward. A few days later, he also fraudulently took possession of an acquaintance’s bicycle: he persuaded him to lend the vehicle supposedly for a trip to the shop, but then failed to return it.

The total material damage caused to the victims amounted to almost UAH 22,500. Shortly after the offences, the man was tracked down. It turned out that he was a local resident who had previously been prosecuted for drug-related offences. Thanks to prompt operational measures, all the stolen property was returned to its owners.

The court found him guilty of theft, fraud and the theft of personal documents under Part 4 of Article 185, Part 2 of Article 190, and Parts 1 and 3 of Article 357 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation in the case was conducted by the Zolochiv District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region. The verdict will enter into legal force after the expiry of the time limit for lodging an appeal.
