Under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Region Prosecutor’s Office, an inspector of the Lviv Customs post was exposed and served a notice of suspicion. He is charged with obtaining an unlawful benefit (Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the investigation, the official organised a scheme to receive bribes from carriers for unimpeded customs clearance of parcels. The amount of the unlawful benefit was EUR 200 per vehicle.
In case of refusal to provide the unlawful benefit, the inspector delayed the customs control process and created artificial obstacles during its passage. In total, the bribes totalling EUR 400 were documented.
The suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the CPC of Ukraine after receiving another bribe.
Almost USD 7 thousand was found and seized during the searches of the man’s residence.
The investigative actions are ongoing. The issues of choosing a custody as a measure of restraint and removing him from his position are being decided.
The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings is being conducted by investigators of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1 of the Main Department of the National Police of the region, based on the materials of the SBU Office in Lviv region. The operation was conducted with the assistance of the Department of Departmental Security and Control of the State Customs Service.
Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict.
