Under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Lviv Region Prosecutor’s Office, the head of a department of the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Volyn region was exposed and served a notice of suspicion. He is charged with extortion and obtaining an unlawful benefit (Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the investigation, the official of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection demanded that an employee of a subordinate state laboratory provide him with an undue benefit on a systematic basis. It was about USD 400 per month.
In return, the man promised not to create artificial obstacles in the employee’s work. In particular, he promised not to conduct unscheduled inspections and not to bring the latter to disciplinary responsibility.
In total, the fact of providing an unlawful benefit totalling USD 2,000 was documented.
The suspect was detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the CPC of Ukraine after receiving another transfer of funds in the amount of USD 1,200.
The investigation is ongoing. The issue of choosing a measure of restraint and removal from office is being decided.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigations, the operational support is being provided by the Strategic Investigations Department in Volyn region of the State Secret Service of the National Police of Ukraine.
Note: In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
