Rescuers in Lviv Region continue to tackle peat fires breaking out in different parts of the region. Such blazes are among the most difficult to extinguish.
Peat ignites and burns underground, so the fire can spread over considerable distances. Dealing with such hotspots requires a great deal of time, effort and resources from the SES units.
Emergency services stress that human carelessness is most often the cause of such fires. This includes burning dry vegetation, lighting campfires in hazardous places and discarding cigarettes that have not been fully extinguished.
Rescuers urge local residents to protect nature, not to burn dry grass and to follow fire safety rules. A single spark can lead to a large-scale disaster.
If you spot a fire, you are asked to call 101 or 112 immediately.
