In Lviv region, quad bike rental manager served notice of suspicion after fatal road accident involving a minor

The manager of a quad bike rental service in Lviv region has been notified of suspicion in connection with a fatal road traffic accident in which a minor girl died. This was reported by investigators of the Lviv region police under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, on 16 April a 35-year-old Lviv resident, who was responsible for the quad bike rental, allowed a 17-year-old resident of Lviv district to drive the vehicle. The girl did not hold a driving licence of the relevant category and did not have safe driving skills.

It was preliminarily established that the quad bike was not registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre and did not meet the necessary technical requirements for operation. In addition, the vehicle had faults in the braking system and the external lighting system.

In a forested area near the village of Vynnychky in Lviv district, the underage driver lost control, drove onto the verge of a dirt road, after which the quad bike overturned. As a result of the injuries sustained, the 17-year-old girl died at the scene.

Investigators of the department for the investigation of criminal proceedings involving children of the Lviv region police have notified the manager responsible for the vehicle of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Article 287 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (putting technically defective vehicles into operation or other breaches of their operation).

The sanction of this article provides for punishment in the form of a fine ranging from one thousand to three thousand tax-free minimum incomes of citizens, or correctional labour for a term of up to two years, or restriction of liberty for a term of up to five years, or imprisonment for a term of up to five years with disqualification from holding positions related to responsibility for the technical condition or operation of vehicles for a term of up to three years, or without such disqualification.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
