Police in Lviv region identify minibus driver who fatally hit a man and fled the scene

The fugitive driver, who was driving the vehicle while intoxicated, faces imprisonment for up to ten years. The Mercedes Sprinter minibus used in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot by law enforcement officers.

The road accident occurred on February 23 at about 23.00 on the road near the village of Shabelnia, Lviv district. As law enforcement officers have previously established, an unknown driver, driving an unidentified vehicle, hit a 23-year-old man and fled the scene. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian was injured and died.

Criminal police operatives together with investigators and officers of the Patrol Police Response Sector of the Police Department No. 2 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1, as well as officers of the Criminal Analysis Department of the Lviv Police, were involved in the search for the fugitive driver.

As a result of the measures taken, having studied the video surveillance footage of the “Safe Lviv Region” system, law enforcement officers found that the man was hit by the driver of a Mercedes Sprinter minibus, a 33-year-old resident of Lviv district, who was driving the vehicle while intoxicated. The minibus involved in the hit-and-run was taken to the impound lot.

Investigators of the Transport Crimes Investigation Department of the Lviv Police opened a criminal proceeding under Part 3 of Article 286-1 (Violation of the rules of road safety or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles while intoxicated) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to ten years with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of five to ten years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
