Police investigate vandalism case at historic cemetery in Sokal, Lviv region

Law enforcement is investigating details of an incident involving damage to historical tombstones at one of the cemeteries in Sokal, Sheptytsky district. The police received a report about the vandalism on October 22.

Scale of destruction

According to the inspection of the territory, police officers discovered:

  • 12 gravestones damaged
  • Age of destroyed objects reaches approximately 100 years
  • All damage concerns historical graves

Criminal case

Investigators from the second department of Sheptytsky district police department initiated criminal proceedings. The case was opened under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns desecration of graves, burial sites, or the body of a deceased person.

Possible punishment for perpetrators:

  • Fine from 1,000 to 4,000 tax-free minimum incomes
  • Probation supervision for up to three years
  • Restriction of liberty for up to three years
  • Imprisonment for the same period

Investigation progress

A pre-trial investigation is currently underway. Officers are working to identify individuals involved in the act of vandalism at the cemetery.
