Law enforcement is investigating details of an incident involving damage to historical tombstones at one of the cemeteries in Sokal, Sheptytsky district. The police received a report about the vandalism on October 22.
Scale of destruction
According to the inspection of the territory, police officers discovered:
- 12 gravestones damaged
- Age of destroyed objects reaches approximately 100 years
- All damage concerns historical graves
Criminal case
Investigators from the second department of Sheptytsky district police department initiated criminal proceedings. The case was opened under Part 1 of Article 297 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns desecration of graves, burial sites, or the body of a deceased person.
Possible punishment for perpetrators:
- Fine from 1,000 to 4,000 tax-free minimum incomes
- Probation supervision for up to three years
- Restriction of liberty for up to three years
- Imprisonment for the same period
Investigation progress
A pre-trial investigation is currently underway. Officers are working to identify individuals involved in the act of vandalism at the cemetery.
