In Lviv region sappers destroy Second World War munitions

In Lviv region sappers from the Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Centre “Lviv” of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine have removed and destroyed Second World War munitions discovered during earthworks in two districts of the region.

According to the rescuers, on 9 June in the town of Pustomyty in Lviv district, a box containing 20 detonators for artillery shells was found during earthworks. In accordance with the established procedure, the dangerous find was removed and destroyed.

The same day, an 82 mm mortar shell was discovered during earthworks in a field near the village of Shyshkivtsi in Zolochiv district. It was also rendered safe by State Emergency Service specialists.

Rescuers stress that even after decades such munitions remain dangerous: due to corrosion and the passage of time they can detonate from impact, vibration or careless handling.

If suspicious objects are found, members of the public are urged not to touch or move them and to call 101 or 112 immediately. Only specially trained specialists should safely neutralise explosive devices.
