Police officers in Lviv region have addressed drivers and pedestrians with a reminder that the railway is a high-risk area, and have urged them to be as vigilant as possible when driving through and crossing level crossings. This was reported by district units of the National Police in Lviv region.
Law enforcement officers emphasise that drivers, when approaching a level crossing and setting off again after stopping in front of it, must follow the instructions of the level crossing attendant, the position of the barrier, the light and sound signals, road signs and markings, and must also make sure that no train is approaching the crossing. These requirements also apply to pedestrians crossing the tracks.
According to the police, the main cause of injuries and fatalities on the railway is being struck by rolling stock – locomotives and railway carriages – as well as the high voltage in overhead power lines.
Law enforcement officers remind the public of the basic rules of conduct on the railway:
- do not stand close to the edge of the platform when a train is approaching;
- cross the tracks only in specially designated places, using footbridges and tunnels, and, if there are none, specially equipped crossings or places with appropriate signs, first making sure that no train is approaching;
- do not crawl under carriages;
- do not play on the railway tracks;
- do not climb onto carriages and locomotives, as this may result in electric shock;
- do not leave children unattended on station platforms.
The police note that compliance with these rules will help preserve life and health. Members of the public are asked to pay attention to offenders, especially minors, to warn them, and, if they refuse to comply, to inform railway staff.
The appeal was joined by Stryi District Police Department, Sambir, Yavoriv, Drohobych and Zolochiv District Police Departments of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region.
