A 24-year-old Audi Q5 driver who caused a fatal road traffic collision in Pustomyty and reported killing his own mother has been notified of suspicion by law enforcement officers in the Lviv region. This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine and the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The incident occurred on 24 June at around 7:10 on Hlynska Street in the town of Pustomyty, Lviv district. A patrol police crew spotted an Audi Q5 without a front number plate. When the officers switched on their blue lights and turned around to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated at high speed in the direction of the exit from Lviv and collided with a police service car.
The Audi driver then lost control and crashed head-on into a Volkswagen. The impact threw the Volkswagen into the yard of a private house, where the car overturned. As a result of the collision, the 50-year-old Volkswagen driver, a resident of the Lviv region, died at the scene from his injuries.
Patrol officers detained the 24-year-old Lviv resident who was driving the Audi. The man also stated that he had killed his mother. This information was confirmed: at his home address, officers found the body of a 51-year-old woman with stab wounds incompatible with life. Preliminary findings indicate that a sudden conflict arose between the suspect and his mother, during which he inflicted fatal stab wounds on her.
The suspect was detained under the procedure of Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators from the investigative department of the Lviv region police, under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, notified him of suspicion of committing criminal offences under Part 1 of Article 115 (intentional murder) and Part 2 of Article 286 (violation of road traffic safety rules or vehicle operation by persons driving vehicles) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The sanctions under these articles provide for a sentence of up to fifteen years’ imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
