Police in Lviv Region Uncover Illegal Border Crossing Scheme
It was established that for $9,000, the perpetrator undertook to illegally transport a military-aged man across Ukraine’s state border during martial law. He faces up to 9 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property for the crime committed.
Investigation Details
As law enforcement officers discovered, a 27-year-old resident of Yavoriv district developed a detailed plan and route for the “client” to illegally cross the state border into a neighboring country, bypassing established checkpoints through the “green section”.
The perpetrator was exposed by operatives of the Migration Police Department, investigators from the General Criminal Investigation Department of the Lviv Police, together with officers of the Main Operational and Search Department of the 27th Border Detachment, under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the Defense Sphere of the Western Region.
On February 17, law enforcement officers detained the suspect in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine after he received money from a conscript in the amount of $9,000.
Searches and Evidence Seizure
During searches in the car and at the residence of the detainee, law enforcement officers discovered and seized money obtained from illegal activities, draft records, communication devices, and other physical evidence of involvement in the crime.
The suspect was notified of suspicion in committing a criminal offense under Part 3 of Article 332 (Illegal Transfer of Persons Across the State Border of Ukraine) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article’s sanction provides for punishment of imprisonment from seven to nine years with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years with confiscation of property.
Pre-trial investigation is ongoing, police are establishing the suspect’s involvement in other crimes.
