Illegal Deforestation Scheme Uncovered in Lviv Region Worth 103 Million UAH

In the Lviv region, another illegal deforestation scheme has been uncovered, causing damages exceeding 103 million UAH. The Specialised Environmental Prosecutor’s Office of the Prosecutor General’s Office discovered that the director of the Slavske subsidiary forestry enterprise ‘Halsillis’, who is also a local council deputy, organised this scheme.

The official issued official permits for the felling of ‘sparse forests’ from 2019 to 2023, which is not provided for by Ukrainian legislation. This was an attempt to legalise the destruction of the forest. In the Stryi district, nearly 19,000 trees were destroyed.

Private enterprises were involved in carrying out the work, unaware of the criminal intentions and believing the work to be legal. The official has been notified of suspicion for illegal logging, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, causing severe consequences (part 4 of article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The prosecutor’s office has petitioned the court for a preventive measure of round-the-clock house arrest, as well as the seizure of property. No position or status grants the right to destroy Ukrainian forests for personal gain.
