Perpetrator Detained for Illegal Cross-Border Smuggling

In Lviv, law enforcement officers detained a perpetrator suspected of facilitating the organization of illegal cross-border smuggling of a military-service-bound individual.

It was established that a 31-year-old resident of Chernivtsi region, under martial law conditions, assisted a conscription-age man in illegally crossing the border of Ukraine with the Republic of Poland outside the border checkpoints.

The perpetrator was exposed by investigators from the department of investigation of particularly serious crimes of the investigative department of Lviv police, together with officers from the Migration Police Department in Lviv region and operatives from the 7th Border Carpathian Detachment, under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the field of defense of the Western region.

As law enforcement officials established, for 10,900 dollars, the suspect, along with accomplices, undertook to illegally transport a military-service-bound man across the state border of Ukraine to the Republic of Poland outside the checkpoints.

On August 10, law enforcement detained the perpetrator under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine after he received funds from a “client”.

The detainee has been notified of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Part 3 of Article 332 (Illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for a punishment of imprisonment for a term of seven to nine years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years and with confiscation of property.

Pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
