
In the Lviv region, police detained the driver of a BMW X5 who committed a fatal accident and fled the scene.
As a result of the collision, a 62-year-old female pedestrian was killed. The driver faces a penalty of up to ten years in prison for the crime. The road accident occurred on October 19 around 5:50 am on the ‘Uzhgorod-Sambir’ highway near the village of Strilkovychi in the Sambir district. According to preliminary findings by law enforcement, an unknown driver, operating an unidentified vehicle, hit the pedestrian and fled the scene.
Officers from the criminal police and other departments of the Sambir District Police Department, as well as operatives from the criminal investigation and other services of the Lviv Region Police, were involved in the search for the fleeing driver. Through their efforts, police identified the perpetrator of the accident as a 27-year-old resident of the Sambir region who was driving a BMW X5 and detained him under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Investigators from the department for investigating crimes in the transport sector of the Lviv Regional Police Department, under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee of the suspicion of committing a crime under part 2 of Article 286 (Violation of traffic safety rules or operation of transport by persons driving vehicles) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and part 1 of Article 135 (Abandonment in danger) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty under the articles is imprisonment for up to eight years with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to three years or without such deprivation.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The vehicle used in the accident has been confiscated by law enforcement and placed in a special parking area.
