In the urban-type settlement of Pidkamin in Lviv region the geological natural monument “Devil’s Rock” has received officially defined boundaries, which ensures its protection as a site of the nature reserve fund. This was reported by the Zolochiv District Prosecutor’s Office.
By a court decision, which the prosecution ensured was enforced, the Pidkamin settlement council was obliged to establish the boundaries of the monument “Erosional outlier of the marine reefs of the Tovtry or Medobory of Sarmatian age in the vicinity of the urban-type settlement of Pidkamin”, known as “Devil’s Rock”. The area of this territory is 3,000 m².
The 16-metre-high rock is a fragment of a former barrier reef that formed in the waters of the ancient Sarmatian Sea approximately 11–14 million years ago from the remains of invertebrate organisms and algae.
For a long time the settlement council did not establish the monument’s boundaries on the ground, which created risks of the unlawful allocation of land from the nature reserve fund into private ownership. The detected violations became grounds for the prosecution to apply to the court.
The court agreed with the prosecutors’ arguments and fully upheld the claim. The decision has now been implemented: information on the boundaries of the nature reserve fund territory has been entered in the State Land Cadastre.
