In Lviv region three people to stand trial over man’s death after fall from attic

In the Drohobych district, bills of indictment have been submitted to court against three local residents in connection with the death of a man who fell from the attic of an abandoned building. This was reported by the Drohobych District Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, in mid-August this year a group of acquaintances were drinking alcohol on the porch of an abandoned building near the centre of Drohobych. During the drinking session, a quarrel broke out between a 52-year-old woman and her 50-year-old acquaintance due to jealousy.

In the course of the conflict, the 52-year-old woman pushed the man with both hands. He lost his balance and fell through the open attic door from a height of about 3.5 metres. As a result of the fall, the victim sustained multiple rib fractures and was in a serious condition.

Despite this, none of those present called an ambulance. Two other participants in the drinking session – a 31-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man – saw that the victim required urgent medical attention, but left him by the building. Before leaving, the 52-year-old woman covered the man with a sheet. He died from his injuries, and his body was only discovered two days later by a passer-by.

The 52-year-old woman is charged with intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in the victim’s death (Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The other two participants in the drinking session are accused of failing to provide assistance to a person in a life-threatening condition, resulting in that person’s death (Part 3 of Article 136 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation in this case was conducted by investigators of the Drohobych District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region. Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt has been proven in accordance with the law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
