
In the village of Sukhovolia, Zolochiv district, a fatal road traffic collision occurred involving a 68-year-old driver of a minibus and a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the investigation, the incident took place on 4 August at around 13:00.
Investigators established that the driver of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter on a curved section of the road lost control, drove onto the right-hand roadside verge and hit a 38-year-old local resident. The man died at the scene from his injuries.
The deceased was an active serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and at the time of the crash was on medical leave. The incident was witnessed by his 17-year-old son, who immediately reported the collision to law enforcement officers.
According to the results of an intoxication test, the alcohol content in the driver's body was almost three times the legal limit. The man was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural guidance of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into a violation of road traffic safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which resulted in the victim's death (Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The issue of notifying the driver of suspicion and choosing a preventive measure is currently being decided; priority investigative actions are ongoing and all the circumstances of the incident are being established. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Investigative Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region.
Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
