In Lviv region, motorcyclist sentenced to 5 years over fatal crash that killed passenger

In the village of Mokrotyn in Lviv district, a 22-year-old motorcyclist whose actions led to a fatal road traffic collision has been convicted. The court sentenced him to 5 years’ imprisonment and banned him from driving for 10 years. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

As established by the court, at the beginning of July this year the convicted man, while in a state of alcohol intoxication, was riding a MUSTANG Grader 250 motorcycle in the village of Mokrotyn. His 25-year-old friend was sitting on the pillion.

On a bend in the road, the rider lost control, crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a Lada car. The impact threw both men off the motorcycle. The passenger sustained severe bodily injuries, including a serious open traumatic brain injury with a fracture of the skull base and brain oedema, and died at the scene.

After the crash, the motorcyclist was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He was charged with violating road safety rules by a person driving a vehicle while intoxicated, resulting in the death of the victim (Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Until the verdict comes into legal force, the convicted man will remain in custody. The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings was conducted by the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region. The court verdict enters into legal force after the time limit for lodging an appeal has expired.
