In Lviv region, over the past 24 hours firefighters have extinguished 19 wildfires in natural ecosystems, with the flames destroying more than 8 hectares of natural areas.
Work is ongoing to put out peat fires near the village of Zeliv in Yavoriv district and the village of Sytykhiv in Lviv district. Such fires are particularly dangerous, as peat can smoulder underground for a long time and the flames can spread over considerable distances.
Firefighters are working every day to contain the sources of ignition and prevent them from spreading further. Today, the region is expecting extreme heat, and high air temperatures, dry vegetation and wind are creating a very high risk of new fires breaking out.
Emergency services are urging residents of the region to act responsibly: do not burn dry vegetation or rubbish, do not light campfires in natural ecosystems, and do not discard unextinguished matches or cigarette butts. It is far easier to prevent a fire than to put one out, so it is vital to follow safety rules and protect nature and the people around you.
