In Lviv region, over the past 24 hours, rescuers have extinguished 19 fires in ecosystems covering a total area of more than 2 hectares. This was reported by the regional units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Work is currently under way to extinguish peat fires near the village of Zeliv in Yavoriv district and the village of Sytykhiv in Lviv district. Emergency workers are on the ground every day to completely eliminate the seats of combustion and prevent the fire from spreading to new areas.
The State Emergency Service stresses that peat fires are among the most dangerous and most difficult to extinguish: the fire can spread underground over considerable distances, and putting it out requires a long time, large amounts of water and significant human resources.
Due to the period of intense heat in Lviv region, when high temperatures, dry vegetation and wind coincide, the risk of fires breaking out and spreading rapidly increases significantly. Even a small spark or an unextinguished cigarette end can cause a large-scale blaze.
Rescuers are urging residents of the region to act responsibly: do not burn dry vegetation or rubbish, do not light campfires in natural ecosystems, and do not discard unextinguished matches or cigarette ends. If a fire is detected, you must immediately call 101 or 112.
