Man detained in Lviv region for brandishing grenade outside shop

In one of the villages of Lviv district on 1 October at around 20:10, a 40-year-old local resident in a state of alcoholic intoxication brandished a grenade outside a shop in front of fellow villagers. The incident was reported to law enforcement officers.

As established by the police, the man took the munition out of his pocket and showed it to those around him. One of the local residents took the grenade away, moved it to a safe place and called the 102 emergency line.

Operatives from the criminal police, investigators and staff from other services of Police Department No.2 of Lviv District Police Administration No.1, as well as specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of the Lviv region police, attended the scene. Law enforcement officers seized the grenade and detained its owner pursuant to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The man has been notified that he is suspected of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unlawful handling of weapons, ammunition or explosive substances). Under this article, he faces a sentence of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officers are establishing the origin of the grenade. Procedural supervision in the criminal proceedings is being carried out by the Zhovkva District Prosecutor’s Office.
