In Sambir district, a man dies after a row over a horse

In the Dobromyl community in the Sambir district, during a drinking session a dispute broke out between two men over a horse, which ended in a fatal beating. This was reported by the Sambir District Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, on the evening of 6 June, a 62-year-old local resident and a 37-year-old guest from a neighbouring village were drinking alcohol in a shed. During the conversation, the guest asked to borrow a horse for field work, but the owner refused. The argument escalated into a fight, during which the host struck his companion several times in the face with his fist.

From the blows received, the man lost consciousness. Seeing that the guest was not moving, the homeowner phoned an acquaintance, who called the emergency medical service. The medics who arrived at the scene were unable to resuscitate the victim – he had died before they arrived.

A forensic medical examination established that the cause of death was a severe head injury with brain damage. The homeowner was detained by law enforcement officers that same evening under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Under the procedural guidance of the Sambir District Prosecutor’s Office, the man has been notified that he is suspected of intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in the victim’s death (Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by Police Department No. 1 of the Sambir District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region.

Law enforcement officers remind the public that, in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
