The Security Service of Ukraine, in coordination with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has apprehended an instructor at the Yavoriv training ground in Lviv region who was acting as a “double” agent. He was simultaneously collaborating with Russia’s FSB and military intelligence agency, the GRU.
According to the investigation, this individual had been assigned by the GRU to plan terrorist attacks targeting Ukrainian Armed Forces commanders undergoing combat training at the Defense Forces’ local training center.
SBU counterintelligence documented that the agent was granted full discretion in choosing the method of assassination.
Among the scenarios considered by the spy:
-
crafting an improvised explosive device (IED) and planting it in the headquarters or training facility;
-
manipulating an unsuspecting colleague to deliver the hidden explosive device to the commanders’ location;
-
transmitting coordinates of military personnel gatherings for a potential Russian missile strike.
Thanks to early detection, SBU successfully thwarted the threat and detained the traitor while he was developing his attack proposal for Russian handlers.
The investigation also confirmed his contact with an FSB handler, to whom he relayed sensitive information regarding troop numbers and unit specifics at the Yavoriv base.
During searches, three mobile phones with SIM cards used to conceal enemy communications were seized from the suspect.
Based on the gathered evidence, he has been officially charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — high treason committed under martial law.
The agent is currently in custody without the possibility of bail. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment and property confiscation.
The joint operation was carried out by SBU counterintelligence officers and investigators from the Lviv region SBU Department, under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Specialized Defense Prosecutor’s Office of the Western Region.
