Beaten and locked in basement – prosecutors defend fair sentence for two residents of Lviv region in appeal
Following the principled position of the prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence of a man and a woman found guilty of robbery and illegal imprisonment (Part 2 of Article 146, Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
They were sentenced to 8 years 3 months and 8 years in prison respectively.
The court proved that in January 2023, in one of the villages of Sheptytskyi district (formerly Chervonohradskyi district), two local residents attacked an elderly man (he was 79 years old at the time of the crime).
The attackers came to the pensioner’s house, knocked on the door, and when he opened it, the man punched him in the face. After that, the accomplices dragged the older man into one of the rooms of the house, sat him on a chair and tied his hands with a sheet. At the same time, one of the convicts began to beat the victim with his fists and demanded all his savings.
After numerous tortures, the victim gave the defendants over UAH 18,000.
However, the accomplices did not stop there, but threw the elderly man into a cellar, with a chair on the door to prevent him from getting out.
The latter managed to escape with severe bodily injuries after a while.
The defence appealed against the verdict, the accused asked for a lighter sentence, and his accomplice asked for release from punishment with probation.
The Lviv Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal in its entirety, upheld the prosecutors’ position and upheld the verdict of the first instance court.
