The man found a grenade in a forest, hid it, and then detonated it, causing him and his friend to be injured.
On January 25, at about 6:30 a.m., the 102 operational line received a report of an explosion near a cemetery in Chervonohrad.
Explosive experts from the Lviv regional police, as well as an investigative team and officers from other services of the Chervonohrad District Police Department, immediately arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers found that two residents of the district center aged 25 and 27 were injured in the explosion and hospitalized.
It was also established that the explosion was caused by careless handling of a hand grenade.
The younger of the injured men, who had previously been prosecuted, found the munition in a forest, hid it, and a few days later detonated it near a cemetery in the presence of his friend, injuring both of them.
Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Chervonohrad District Prosecutor’s Office, served the offender a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Part 1 of Art. 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
Law enforcement officers once again remind and urge: if you find a dangerous or suspicious object, especially if it resembles a grenade, mine, artillery shell or other ammunition, do not examine it up close, pick it up or move it. Immediately report the discovery to the 102 operational line and try to fence it off to prevent other people from getting hurt. Behave responsibly!
