Lviv Region Police Actively Combats Domestic Violence
Since the beginning of the year, police in Lviv and the region have registered 1847 cases of domestic violence. This year, law enforcement officers have compiled 1486 reports under Article 173-2 (Commission of domestic violence, gender-based violence, failure to comply with an urgent restraining order, or failure to notify of one’s temporary location) of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. Out of this number, 234 reports were filed for domestic violence against children.
Criminal Proceedings and Restrictive Measures
For systematic domestic violence, 64 criminal proceedings were initiated on the grounds of a criminal offense provided for in Article 126-1 (Domestic Violence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In addition, 118 criminal proceedings were started for offenses provided for in Article 390-1 (Failure to comply with restrictive measures, restrictive orders, or failure to attend programs for perpetrators) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Moreover, since the beginning of the year, Lviv police have issued approximately one thousand urgent restraining orders against offenders.
Response to Complaints and Offender Registration
For every complaint about domestic violence received on the operational line 102, police conduct checks and risk assessments for domestic violence, based on which decisions are made to issue urgent restraining orders, implement restrictive measures, or hold the offender administratively or criminally accountable. In some cases, several restrictive measures may be applied to the offender simultaneously.
Currently, 3974 offenders are registered with police departments in Lviv region.
It should be noted that domestic violence can take various forms and manifestations. These include, among others, physical, psychological, sexual, and economic types of violence.
