Death of a Child in Lviv Region: Investigation Underway

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-year-old boy in the Lviv region. Preliminary reports suggest the child died from hypothermia, and a criminal investigation has been launched.

On February 9, the police received a report from medics at a hospital in the Yavoriv district about the death of a two-year-old boy during medical assistance. As determined by the police, the father, a 43-year-old resident of the district, brought the child to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed the young patient with general hypothermia and other illnesses. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, but unfortunately, he passed away.

It was also established that the boy was raised in a large family that was registered with social services. The boy’s father and mother were unemployed and did not provide adequate living and upbringing conditions for the children. They have been detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Investigators have informed the mother and father of suspicion in committing a criminal offense as per Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Additionally, a criminal proceeding against social service workers has been initiated under Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment from five to eight years.

The executive committee of the territorial community decided to remove the children and place them in a specialized children’s institution. A pre-trial investigation is being conducted, and law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the event.
