Border Guards Refuse 1.4 Million UAH in Bribes

Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine’s border guards have refused bribes amounting to almost 1.4 million hryvnias.

In just the first 10 days of September, servicemen of the 7th border Carpathian unit documented 10 attempted bribes totaling 35 thousand hryvnias. In August, 35 cases of bribe proposals were recorded amounting to more than 343 thousand hryvnias. The largest attempt was at the Shehyni checkpoint, where an offender tried to give border guards almost 237 thousand hryvnias.

“Attempts to bribe were most often made by people with forged documents, citizens without the necessary documents to cross the border, or those trying to avoid responsibility through financial pressure,” reported Valentyna Skred, assistant to the unit commander and head of the corruption prevention and detection department.

All facts were properly documented and the materials were handed over to law enforcement agencies. The zero-tolerance policy towards corruption remains unchanged. “No unlawful offer influences the decisions of our servicemen. For the briber, the consequence is always the same – criminal liability according to the law,” emphasized Valentyna Skred.

In addition to documenting bribe attempts, the 7th border Carpathian unit actively involves employees from the internal and own security department, operational-investigative units, and corruption prevention and detection department. They ensure a range of preventive measures to prevent abuses and involvement of personnel in illegal activities.
