Fatal road accident in Lviv region – driver sentenced
Following a public prosecution by prosecutors of the Zhovkva District and Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Offices, a 24-year-old man was found guilty of violating traffic safety rules by driving a vehicle while intoxicated, which caused the victim’s death (Part H of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 5 years and 6 months. He was also deprived of the right to drive vehicles for 5 years.
It was established that at the end of May last year, in the morning, the accused, while intoxicated, and his friend were driving a Mazda 6 along the Lviv-Lutsk motorway. Near the village of Novyi Stav, Lviv district, the driver lost control and drove to the roadside, where the car overturned and hit an electricity pole.
As a result, both the driver and his 24-year-old companion were injured. The passenger died in an ambulance called by eyewitnesses.
The man will be kept in custody until the verdict comes into force.
The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region.
The court verdict will come into force after the expiration of the appeal period.
