Maidan cases: Ex-Berkut member who organized explosion at Lviv base sentenced to 10 years in prison

Following a public prosecution, prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office found the former deputy commander and chief of staff of the Berkut special police battalion of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in Lviv region guilty.

He was convicted in absentia on the fact of abuse of power by a law enforcement officer (Part 3 of Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was also deprived of the right to hold positions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs for a period of 3 years and fined 1500 tax-free minimum incomes.

Prosecutors proved in court that in February 2014, during the Maidan in Lviv, the defendant organized and carried out an explosion of flammable substances and objects in the weapons room on the basis of a special unit. As a result, the wall collapsed and two employees who were passing by at the time were killed.

In addition, the base premises, weapons, ammunition, special equipment, documents and other property were damaged. The total amount of damage is almost UAH 1 million.

The Berkut officer is currently on the international wanted list.
