The Commercial Court has upheld prosecutors’ claim for the recovery of almost UAH 1.4 million in damages caused to the environment by pollution of a water body in the Lviv region. This was reported by the Halych District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Lviv.

It was established that during the operation of the wastewater treatment facilities, which are on the books of one of Lviv’s higher education institutions, wastewater was discharged for a prolonged period with levels exceeding the maximum permissible standards. The treatment facilities were operating inefficiently and their technological equipment was in a worn-out condition.
As a result, between 473 and 487 cubic metres of insufficiently treated wastewater were entering the water body every day. Laboratory tests and a forensic engineering and environmental examination recorded a significant exceedance of permissible concentrations of pollutants, creating a real threat to the environment and the river’s ecosystem.
The total amount of damage caused is almost UAH 1.4 million. In view of this, prosecutors from the Halych District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Lviv filed a claim with the court for compensation for the damage caused to the state. Prosecutors from the Specialised Environmental Prosecutor’s Office (with the status of a department) of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office took part in the consideration of the case.
The court ruled that the damage be recovered in full.
