In Brody, driver notified of suspicion after crash that killed three underage passengers

In the town of Brody, a 24-year-old local resident who was driving a Mercedes has been notified of suspicion of violating road traffic safety rules while under the influence of alcohol, which led to the deaths of several people (Part 4, Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Procedural supervision in the proceedings is being carried out by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, in the night of 20 July in Brody, the driver lost control, drove onto the roadside, collided with a tree and a concrete electricity pole, after which the car overturned.

As a result of this road traffic accident, three underage female passengers were killed — two 16-year-old girls and one 15-year-old girl. Two more underage passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity.

After the crash, the driver left the scene, but law enforcement officers quickly established his whereabouts and detained him under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A medical examination showed that the alcohol content in his body was almost twice the legal limit.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and a decision is being made on the choice of a preventive measure for the suspect. The investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv Region. In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
