Cyber Police exposed the participants of a criminal organization in fraud under the guise of state payments

The attackers used phishing sites to obtain data from citizens’ bank cards and further appropriation of money. According to preliminary estimates, the victim has caused more than one million hryvnias. The persons were detained, they were suspected.
The scheme of fraud was exposed by employees of the department of counteraction to cybercriminals in the Lviv region together with the investigator of the police department of Lviv region.
The organizer searched for contractors who created phishing sites. Further, the attackers used online services for mass mailing SMS. Citizens were reported to receive social payments, including support, assistance from the EU, various charitable funds. To do this, they were asked to go to the link and indicate the data of bank cards, which would allegedly enrolled assistance.
The information that users introduced on phishing sites automatically became known to the attackers. In the future, the participants of the scheme appropriated the money from the victims.
According to preliminary data, in this way, they cheated more than a hundred citizens. The total amount of losses is one million hryvnias.
In the homes of the persons involved, police officers conducted searches. Mobile phones, SIM cards and laptops used in illegal activities have been removed.
The attackers were detained in the order of Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The participants of the scheme were announced on the suspicion of Art. 255 (creation, management of a criminal community or criminal organization, as well as participation in it), Part 4 of Art. 190 (fraud), Part 5 of Art. 361 (unauthorized interference with information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The suspect may threaten up to twelve years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. Investigative actions are ongoing.
Cyber Police calls for citizens to receive information about social payments only from official sources. The real pages of state bodies, charitable organizations, banking structures and organizations in messengers and social networks should be verified. We also urge not to report the confidential data by outsiders and not enter such information on suspicious resources.
