Hospital official in Lviv region charged with taking $2,500 bribes to extend disability status for draft dodgers

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), in cooperation with the National Police, detained an official from a district hospital in the Lviv region who was profiting from individuals trying to avoid military mobilization.

According to the investigation, the official, who oversaw expert commissions assessing individuals’ functional capabilities (previously MSEC), was caught accepting bribes for unlawfully extending disability status.

Specifically, he was helping conscripts obtain or prolong their third group disability, which allowed them to avoid being drafted into military service.

He charged $2,500 for each such “service.” The suspect was apprehended red-handed immediately after receiving the full bribe amount.

During court-sanctioned searches, law enforcement officers discovered:

  • medical records,

  • handwritten notes documenting the scheme,

  • and cash, the origin of which is under investigation.

The hospital official has been formally charged under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — accepting a bribe by an official. He has been placed in custody with an option to post bail.

The investigation continues as authorities work to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in the corrupt operation.

The operation was conducted by the SBU’s Lviv regional office in collaboration with the regional police and under the procedural oversight of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
