Man beaten and robbed in Lviv hotel: two minors formally notified of suspicion

In Lviv, in one of the city’s hotels, three individuals, including two 17-year-old local residents, are, according to the investigation, involved in an armed robbery of a man who was gambling and had a substantial sum of money in his bank account. The minors have been formally notified that they are suspected of robbery committed under martial law by a group of persons acting in prior conspiracy (Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), under the procedural supervision of the Halytskyi District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Lviv.

According to the investigators’ findings, at the beginning of July this year a 21-year-old man learned about the large amount of money in the account of the victim, who was staying at a hotel in Lviv, and decided to seize it. To carry out his plan, he involved two 17-year-old friends, after which he joined the victim’s group.

At an opportune moment, the 21-year-old suspect snatched a mobile phone from the man’s hands. When the victim tried to retrieve his property, all three, according to the investigation, took turns beating him with their hands and feet on the head, torso and limbs, threatening further violence. As a result of the attack, the man sustained a fractured nasal bone and other bodily injuries.

After this, the attackers, having taken the phone and, under threats, obtained access to mobile banking, forced the victim to go to a cash machine, where they withdrew 20,000 UAH from his account. Due to the set limit, they were unable to withdraw the remaining amount. To circumvent the restriction, they allegedly, according to the investigation, threatened a 16-year-old girl who was present with physical violence and forced her to provide a bank card, to which one of the perpetrators transferred a further more than 33,000 UAH from the victim’s account. The girl was forced to withdraw this money from a cash machine and hand it over to the accomplices.

In total, the attackers took possession of the victim’s phone and money amounting to 58,000 UAH. Earlier, within the framework of the same criminal proceedings, the 21-year-old accomplice had already been notified of suspicion and a preventive measure in the form of detention in custody was applied. The court imposed a preventive measure in the form of round-the-clock house arrest on the two minor suspects.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Investigation Department of Police Station No. 1 of Lviv District Police Department No. 1 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region. Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt has been proven in accordance with the law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
