In Lviv, a 20-year-old resident of Kharkiv region is suspected of defrauding a 74-year-old Lviv woman. According to the investigation, he posed as an employee of the prosecutor's office and took possession of her savings amounting to 7,000 US dollars. This was reported under the procedural guidance of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor's Office of the city of Lviv.
The investigation established that on 29 July this year an unidentified person called the pensioner and provided false information about an alleged road traffic accident involving her daughter-in-law, who urgently needed money for treatment. The woman was told to hand over the money to a man who was allegedly an employee of the prosecutor's office.
After this, the suspect arrived at the victim's place of residence in Lviv and received 7,000 US dollars from her, which she had been putting aside for her granddaughter's education. The man then left the scene and disposed of the money at his own discretion.
When the pensioner realised she had fallen victim to fraud, she contacted the police. Law enforcement officers promptly established the man's whereabouts and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has been notified of suspicion of taking possession of another person's property by deception (fraud), committed under martial law by a group of persons acting in prior conspiracy (Part 3 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of Police Department No. 2 of the Lviv District Police Directorate of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region; investigative actions are ongoing and other persons who may be involved in this criminal offence are being identified. In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
