Law enforcement officers seized from the detainee, who had previously been prosecuted for theft and robbery, part of the stolen goods, including a coin collection belonging to the owner of the apartment, a numismatist.
The police received a report of a theft from an apartment in a building on Danylo Halytskoho Square in Lviv on 26 October. According to law enforcement officers, at night, the offender, having picked up the keys to the front door, entered the apartment, stole cash in the amount of USD 5,000 and EUR 5,000, as well as a collection of coins, and fled.
Criminal police operatives and investigators of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1, as well as officers of the Criminal Analysis Department of the Lviv Police, were involved in solving the crime. In the course of the operation, having studied the video surveillance footage of the “Safe Lviv Region” system, the police established the offender’s whereabouts within a few hours and detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The detainee was identified as a 34-year-old resident of Lviv, who had previously been prosecuted for theft and robbery. Physical evidence, including a collection of coins, was seized from him.
Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Halychyna District Prosecutor’s Office, served the offender a notice of suspicion of committing a criminal offence under Part 4 of Art. 185 (theft) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to eight years.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
