Man detained in Lviv for keeping a grenade at home

In Lviv, in a flat on Virmenska Street, police officers discovered an object resembling an F-1 grenade and 5.45 mm calibre cartridges. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

The incident occurred on 1 August at around 23:00. A Lviv woman called the 102 emergency line and reported that a male acquaintance in a flat in a building on Virmenska Street was threatening her with a grenade. An investigative team from Lviv District Police Department No.1, patrol police crews, as well as specialists from the explosive ordnance disposal unit, the Canine Centre, special forces officers and staff from other Lviv region police units responded to the call.

Law enforcement officers established that the person involved in the incident was a 36-year-old local resident. During an urgent search of his flat, they found an object resembling an F-1 grenade and 5.45 mm calibre cartridges. All seized items were sent for expert examination.

The man was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators from the territorial police unit opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – illegal handling of weapons and ammunition. The article provides for a penalty of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officers are establishing the origin of the seized grenade and ammunition.
