Man detained in Lviv on suspicion of making a false bomb threat at railway station

A 31-year-old Lviv resident has been detained on suspicion of making a false report about the mining of the Main Railway Station in Lviv. He is a serviceman and is currently listed as AWOL.

The bomb threat report reached the police on 12 August. An investigative-operational team from Police Department No.1 of Lviv District Police Directorate No.2, explosives experts and dog handlers, as well as officers from other Lviv region police units, were deployed to the scene.

Law enforcement officers examined the station building and the surrounding area and organised the evacuation of people. No explosive devices were found.

Criminal police operatives identified the man who had made the false report. He turned out to be a 31-year-old Lviv resident serving in the military, who is currently listed as AWOL. The man was detained under Article 615 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 2 of Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (knowingly false report about a threat to public safety, destruction or damage to property) and under Part 5 of Article 407 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorised abandonment of a military unit or place of service). The maximum penalty provided for by these articles is imprisonment for up to ten years.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and a decision is being made on serving the detainee with a notice of suspicion and choosing a preventive measure.
