Two Zakarpattia Residents Caught in Lviv Attempting to Bomb Ukrainian Soldier’s Car for Russian Intelligence

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully thwarted another terrorist plot orchestrated by Russian intelligence in Western Ukraine. In Lviv, two enemy agents were arrested while trying to plant an explosive device under a vehicle belonging to a Ukrainian Defense Forces serviceman.

The suspects were caught red-handed as they attempted to hide an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a sports bag under the car. The explosive was intended to be detonated remotely via a call to a mobile phone connected to the device.

According to investigators, the IED contained 4.5 kilograms of explosive material and was enhanced with metal nuts for maximum damage.

The operation involved two young men from Zakarpattia, aged 22 and 23, who were recruited by Russian handlers through Telegram channels where they were seeking quick money. After being remotely recruited, they arrived in Lviv, collected the explosive from a stash, and conducted reconnaissance near the soldier’s vehicle.

To monitor the attack, they installed a smartphone camera with remote access across from the parking spot, allowing Russian intelligence to observe the explosion in real-time.

However, SBU’s cyber specialists detected the plot in time, neutralized both the explosive and the surveillance camera, thereby preventing the attack.

The detained individuals have been officially charged under Article 111, Part 2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code — high treason committed under martial law. Both remain in custody and face life imprisonment with property confiscation if found guilty.

The operation was carried out by the SBU in Lviv Oblast under the supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.

The SBU warns that Russian intelligence is now using a new tactic: deploying agents unknowingly and then eliminating them to erase any trace of involvement.
