
A criminal involved in a 20-million-hryvnia theft was detained in Lviv
The suspect stole a safe containing cash, jewelry, and other valuable items. He faces a potential punishment of up to twelve years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Details of the crime
On April 24, the police received a report from a 62-year-old Lviv resident that a portable metal safe, containing cash, jewelry, and other valuable items, was stolen from his apartment on Heroiv Maidanu Street.
Detectives from the criminal investigation department, officers from the criminal analysis department of Lviv police, as well as operatives from the criminal police and investigators from Lviv District Police Department No. 2 were involved in solving the crime.
Investigation and detention
According to law enforcement, the criminal accessed the apartment using a picked key, stole the portable metal safe, and later unlocked it to steal over 200,000 dollars, more than 220,000 euros, jewelry, and other valuables totaling nearly 20 million hryvnias.
Through conducted measures and studying CCTV footage from the ‘Safe Lviv Region’ system, police determined the criminal’s location and detained him. He was identified as a 64-year-old Lviv resident. Soon, a court will decide on a preventive measure for him.
During a search of the suspect’s residence, law enforcement officers found and seized the stolen cash, valuables, and evidence linking the suspect to the crime.
Investigators, under the procedural guidance of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office, informed the detainee of the suspicion of committing a crime under Part 5 of Article 185 (Theft) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The article’s penalty includes imprisonment for a term of seven to twelve years with confiscation of property.
