A man was detained in Lviv who demanded 2,000 euros of non-existent debt

Under the procedural leadership of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a 52-year-old citizen of Ukraine was exposed and notified of suspicion of extortion (Part 4, Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

According to the investigation, the suspect demanded from a resident of the Lviv region to pay him 2,000 euros of non-existent debt every month.

In case of non-payment, the man threatened to physically assault the victim and his relatives.

The law enforcement officers detained the extortionist in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, after transferring to him another payment in the amount of UAH 40,000.

During searches of the detainee’s residence, law enforcement officers found weapons, ammunition and about 350,000 US dollars.

Investigations are ongoing. The issue of appointing a number of examinations is being resolved.

The suspect was remanded in custody without bail.

The pre-trial investigation is carried out by the investigators of the State Security Service of Ukraine in the Lviv Region.

Note: in accordance with Art. 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his guilt is proven in a legal manner and established by a court verdict.
